NYCleaners

Whether it is a modern, wall to wall installation or an antique area rug, the use of carpets in a home can turn any space into a far more welcoming and warm setting. And while the good looks of a carpet are a major part of its overall appeal, there is the texture to consider, too. Unfortunately, between life’s everyday wear and tear, spills, debris tracked inside, and many other issues, carpets can start to look and feel a bit less appealing.

That is why it is of the utmost importance to know how to keep your carpets in tip-top condition. Yet, with carpet care comes some risks. After all, it is entirely possible to treat a stain in a way that leaves that small area of the carpet or rug a bit more rigid, uneven or damaged. To help with this issue, we offer 11 carpet cleaning hacks that can save your carpet AND keep it looking and feeling its best over the long-term.

1. Roll it!

No, we don’t mean you should roll up the rug or carpet! What we mean is that you should invest in a jumbo lint roller! Rather than busting out the vacuum every time an area gets a bit hairy, crumby or covered in particles of some sort, use the lint roller. Not only does this allow you to actually remove everything, but it spares the carpet from the wear and tear that a vacuum can cause. HINT: If you have a short-haired pet, a squeegee is often the best way to get those wiry and tough to remove hairs out of the carpet.

2. Blot it!

Most of us know to blot garment stains but may find ourselves rubbing and scrubbing the carpet. This only makes the stain worse. Instead, use whatever cleaning solution you have chosen and apply gentle blotting pressure directly to the stain with a sponge or cloth. Blot inwards from the outside to stop the stain from spreading outward as you work.

3. Iron it!

If you are facing serious stains, start with a good vacuum of the area and then use a simple solution of vinegar and water (1:3 ratio) and gently pouring it over the stain and allowing five to ten minutes for it to soak in. Then put a towel over the stain and use a heated iron, rubbing it over the spot with gentle pressure. This will transfer the stain to the towel and spare your carpet from harsh chemicals.

4. De-Odor it!

If you have pets, the inevitable pet stains will occur. Don’t run the risk of a stinky stain and simply use household baking soda to soak up the scent. You have to apply a generous amount directly to the area where soiling has occurred and then gently blot the stain. Repeat until the stain is gone and the area odor-free.

5. Call in experts

When you have a stain on a carpet and are unsure of just how to eliminate it, one of the best carpet saving hacks is to just call in the experts. They will know what compounds to use and what gadgets are required to spare your rug and damage while also eliminating stains, odors, bacteria and more.

Whether you want a green cleaner, a specialist to clean an antique or a whole-house carpet cleaning, these hacks should help!
